My Microlink Review

Microlinks have been popular for many years. It has become more popular as of this year. This is my first time wearing extensions in my LIFE! I’ve had braids of course, but actual extensions has never been something I’ve tried. This is a protective style for those who are accustom to getting their hair done more often ( a bit more maintenance). There are two types of Microlinks, I-tips and Weft (braidless sew-in). I’ve had the I-tips since June and since we are 6 months in the game I felt it was finally time to share my two cents about them. (Wish they cost that much haha)

The Process

So here’s the process. My Stylist washed and blow dried my hair as usual. Once she straightened my hair, she added little tiny beads to the roots click HERE to see. Once she added them, she put each I-tip into the little beads and clamped it to my hair and the bead. Literally that easy just a bit time consuming. I have about 150-200 I-tips in my hair. Is it heavy? Not at all. I’m used to a head full of hair so it doesn't bother me. When we took them out to wash I low key felt bald headed lol.

The I-tips are only in the middle of my head. I have hair at the Top, sides, and bottom out so I can do a cute pony if I like. The process is extremely pain LESS! That was one of the many reasons I chose this option rather than a traditional sew-in. My hair isn’t braided or pinned to anything but a little bead. I loved the idea of having it more fuller and a good length. My hair is honestly growing like a weeds with them so minor hair breakage. It’s just like having braids.

Maintenance

I was a bit clueless when I went back for maintenance. I wasn’t sure how she would get my roots straight like they were previously. Until she told me the roots will grow and you can’t even tell they’re not “straight” under the head full of hair you have. So every 2 weeks I go and get a wash and blow dry just like I did my regular hair. I basically treat the I-tips just like my hair (BECAUSE I PAID FOR IT ) lol. My hair is Cambodian so it matches well with my texture. I don’t wear my hair curly so I do have heat damage. It doesn’t really get to me because I can’t manage my hair in its natural state.

You have the option to pull the links back up after a few weeks to preserve the install. I’m sure once you do that, you can wear the Microlinks for 4-6 months. I have only had them in max 3-4 months.

The Cost

I have seen so many different prices for this hair. Again there is different types of Microlinks. So each stylist differs. My stylist charges $750 for them. In my opinion, that’s not a bad price because hair comes with that price and it’s only $75 to get them washed and straightened every 2 weeks or however long you go. That’s a steal for me. When she reinstalls the hair it’s only $400. This style is definitely an investment. My line of work, I’m always in front of a camera so it made sense to have a style that is easily manageable for me and pleasing to me.

I have seen some charge upwards of $1,000 or more. Again the style is very time consuming to install so we definitely owe the stylist a great deal of change to do what they do.

FAQ: About Microlinks

I get so many questions about them so I wanted to answer them here.

Q. Do they hurt?

  • No, they don’t. They’re not on your scalp or causing tension. Your head may be sore for a few if you’re getting accustomed to extensions in your hair.

Q. Are they heavy?

  • No, however everyone is different. I have a lot of hair so I needed more I-tips than average. If you have a lesser amount of hair, you will have less I-tips. Even when I have them in a ponytail, it’s still very lightweight. They’re called “tips” for a reason. As for the weft Microlinks I can’t say if they are or not because I’ve never used them.

    Q. Can you see the link?

  • Yes if they’ve grown a bit overtime. When they’re down the hair shaft you will be able to see the link but it’s not as noticeable because my hair is black and so is the Microlinks bead. However, when I have a fresh install, you can’t see them at all. Even when I put them in a ponytail.

    Q. Can I wear them wet or in a natural state?

  • Yes, there is all types of Microlink hair. They have hair that has a kinky texture to match those who are accustom to wearing their hair curly. I’m sure it would blend beautifully.

    Q. Do they pull on your hair?

  • Not at all. They are clamped onto your hair pretty tight. Out of the 6 months wearing them, I think I’ve lost 3 at max.

    Q. How do you wrap them at night?

  • I pin curl mine or wear them in a top knot to preserve the curls. I’m sure you can probably wrap them as well (I’ve yet to do this).

Microlinks are by far my favorite. I will be putting them to the test in 2022 when I start working out. So let’s hope they can last just as much when I’m not working out. Outside of that these are perfect for someone who just wants a little more va va voom. So what do you think? Yes, I have grey hairs popping out. Let’s just say I’m very wise haha.
